Jiu Jitsu, which means “the gentle art” in Japanese, is a grappling based self defense system that emphasizes the proper application of technique, leverage, timing, and patience to win over strength and aggression. It teaches the student to use the attacker’s energy against them, rather than opposing it head-on. Essentially, Jiu Jitsu gives a smaller individual the ability to defend themselves against a larger and stronger opponent in a stand-up confrontation or on the ground. ‘Gracie’ or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the name given to the style of Jiu Jitsu that was developed by the Gracie family in Brazil and is often referred to by the acronym BJJ.

Here at the academy, our approach is balanced and methodical. Our curriculum focuses on technique that is effective for self-defense and competition. We teach our students defense against strikes, the clinch, take-downs, throws, sweeps, chokes, joint locks and various other submission holds.
